The Lord Hates Sin

Scripture: Proverbs 6:16-19, ‘There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.’

Observations: Again this wisdom saying is tied directly into what ‘the Lord’ thinks. This isn’t just a man’s perspective but God’s perspective. This style of proverb is known as a numerical proverb which follows the pattern X+1, which is a way of saying that there are many examples of which only a few are mentioned. So here there’s not just 6 things that God hates, but seven that are detestable to him. The word hate and detestable are strong words that describe how God feels about these things. They are detestable, loathsome, repulsive to him. They are abominations in his sight. The writer lists 7:

1) haughty eyes – which is a way of saying pride,

2) a lying tongue,

3) hands that shed innocent blood,

4) a heart that devises wicked schemes,

5) feet that are quick to rush into evil,

6) a false witness who pours out lies, and

7) a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.

No one likes these sorts of things, but we have varying feelings about each of them i.e. we would consider the shedding of innocent blood as being worse than lying. But God hates/detests them all. Why? Because they are examples of people acting contrary to God’s character. People have no cause for pride in God’s eyes, because they are sinners. God is truth, he can’t abide lying, or false witnesses. God is just, so the shedding of innocent blood is wrong. God is holy and righteous, so wickedness and evil are detestable in his sight. God knows perfect harmony within the Trinity, so he hates disharmony and dissension. If God’s glory is revealed in his character, then all these things fall short of his glory, which is what the Bible calls sin (Rom 3:23).

Application: What things are there in your life that God hates, or finds detestable? They don’t have to be big things, because God hates anything that doesn’t conform to his perfect standard – Himself. Do you feel about those things the same way God does? Or do you make excuses or try and justify them? I would encourage you to confess your sins today, because God hates sin, he finds it detestable. The Good News is that God provides a way to cleanse yourself from the stain of sin – putting your faith in the blood of Jesus. In Jesus all our sins are washed away, we are made clean in God’s sight.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, there are probably more things wrong in my life than I could even count. Lord, I fall so far short of Your glory, I am so undeserving of Your love, and yet You sent Jesus to die in my place, so that through His blood I might be cleansed and forgiven and made holy and right in Your sight. Lord, I want to thank You for Your grace and for making me Your child. If there is anything that You hate in my life may You reveal it by Your Holy Spirit and help me to change my life so that it brings honour and glory to You. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.
