The Lord Sees

Scripture: Proverbs 5:21, ‘For a man’s ways are in full view of the Lord, and he examines all his paths.’

Observations: The point of the book of Proverbs is that how we live matters. And here we see why – because the Lord sees. God sees all of our ways, and what’s more he ‘examines’ all that we do. This is actually the same word that appears in verse 6, where an adulteress ‘gives no thought to her way of life.’ While she might not think about it, God is. And this is true for all of life. While we don’t think about our actions or their consequences, God does. While we don’t care if something is right or wrong, God does. According to the Bible God even sees into our hearts and minds and judges our thoughts and our attitudes. There is nothing that we can hide from God.

Application: Firstly, we need to remember that God knows everything about us. In fact, God knows us better than we know ourselves. Don’t for a second think that you can hide something from God, or that you can get away with something. While it might seem that way, the truth is that one day we will face God and give answer for everything that we have done, we are only postponing the inevitable. Secondly, if God sees and knows our sin the only proper response is to confess it. Only Jesus can provide the forgiveness that we need. Thirdly, we need to repent of our sin and commit to living in a way that honours God.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, You see all of my life, and none of my ways are hidden from Your sight. So, I confess my sins before You this morning, all the ways that I fall short of Your glory, all the ways that I fail You and others. Lord, I turn to Your Son in faith, believing that on the cross Jesus paid the penalty for my sins. Lord, I trust that in Christ I am forgiven and made clean in Your sight. Lord, fill me with Your Holy Spirit that today I might live for You, that all of my ways might bring You honour and glory. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
