The Perfect Law

Scripture: James 1:25, ‘The man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.’

Observations: James tells us not to ‘merely listen to the word, but do what it says. (v22)’ In verse 25 James encourages us to ‘look intently into the perfect law.’ It is perfect because it comes from God who is perfect. And because it comes from God it is worth looking intently into. It is worth studying and meditating on. Not only are we to look intently into God’s word we are to do so ‘continuously.’ Reflecting on God’s word should become a part of our daily lives. Not only should we look into it intently and continuously, but we should also remember what we have heard. We need to draw God’s word into our heart, so that we can bring it to mind when we need it. It’s interesting that we don’t read God’s word, we listen to it. The Bible is more than just words ona page, it is the voice of God speaking into our lives. Finally, we need to do what God’s word tells us to do. We need to obey it. In the Greek it actually says we need to ‘do the work.’ And the promise is, that if we look intently into God’s perfect law, if we do so continuous, not forgetting what we read, but putting it into practice, we will be blessed. God will bless our obedience, or our work.

Application: Firstly, do you intently look into God’s perfect word? Do you study what God has said? Secondly, do you do so continuously, everyday and even throughout your day? Thirdly, do you memorize God’s word? Fourthly, do you obey God’s word, do you apply it to your life? According to James if we do these four things than God will bless what we do in obedience to Him. This is not a legalistic thing, that God must bless you if you do this, rather God’s word is an instrument that God uses to communicate his grace and blessing in our lives.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, continue to grow my passion for Your word, because Your word are more than just words, they are the words of life, they are words that Your Spirit uses to change and transform me into the likeness of Your Son. Your words bring blessing and grace and peace and hope and joy. Lord, fill me with Your Spirit that I might understand what You are saying to me. Help me to remember Your words and put them into practise. Lord, may I know Your blessing in all that I do. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
