The Resurrection

Scripture: John 11:25, ‘Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies.’

Observations: Lazarus has been dead for 4 days by the time Jesus arrives. Martha meets him and says to Jesus ‘even now God will give you whatever you ask. (v22)’ Jesus tells her that Lazarus will rise again (v23) and Martha agrees that on the last day he will indeed rise again in the resurrection at the last day (v24). But Jesus says ‘I am the resurrection and the life.’ This is another one of Jesus’ ‘I am’ statements, hinting at his divinity i.e. that he is Yahweh, the Great I Am. Resurrection means to rise again, and it refers to the transition from death to life. It seems strange that Jesus adds ‘I am the life,’ when resurrection already implies that, but it’s likely that Jesus means he is not only the one who raises the dead, he is also the one who gives them eternal life. Life, whether it’s new life or eternal life is only found in Jesus. Then Jesus says ‘He who believes in me will live, even though he dies.’ Jesus makes it clear that everyone dies, but those who believe in him ‘will live’ again. The key to eternal life is faith in Jesus Christ. On the cross Jesus defeats death, and just as death has no hold on Jesus (Act 2:24), so it has no hold on those who trust him.

Application: Our eternal destiny is bound up exclusively in the person of Jesus Christ. If we believe he is the Christ, that he is God’s Son, that he died on the cross for my sins and rose again, then Jesus assures us that we will receive eternal life, that after we die we will be resurrected to a new and everlasting life. Do you believe in Jesus? Do you have the assurance that after you die you will receive eternal life? Christianity is all about our hope in life after death, do you have that hope?

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I deserve eternal separation from You because of my sin, and yet in Your great love You sent Your Son, Jesus Christ to die in my place so that my sins could be forgiven and I might be reconciled with You. I believe in Jesus, I believe He is my only hope in life and in death, and I look forward to the resurrection when I will see Him face to face and give You glory forever. Lord, I thank You for the grace that gives such an undeserved gift. May I live today in light of what You have promised for tomorrow. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
