The Sin of the City

Scripture: Micah 1:5, ‘All this is because of Jacob’s transgression, because of the sins of the house of Israel. What is Jacob’s transgression? Is it not Samaria? What is Judah’s high place? Is it not Jerusalem?’

Observations: In the previous verses Micah proclaims ‘the Lord is coming, (v3)’ and the Lord comes in judgment, he causes ‘the mountains to melt and the valleys to split apart. (v4)’ And this terrible calamity ‘is because of Jacob’s transgression, because of the sins of the house of Israel.’ God judges sin, even the sin of his own people. So what exactly are the sins of God’s people? According to Micah it is the capital city of each nation – Samaria the capital of Israel, and Jerusalem the capital of Judah. So why does Micah single out the capital cities. Firstly, because these cities had become the centre of religious activity, religion that had become corrupt. Micah mentions how God would break their idols and destroy their images (v7). As capital cities their corrupted religion had spread to the rest of the nation. Secondly, because these cities were the home of the wealthiest and most privileged in society, and it was there that the gap between the rich and poor was most evident. Micah is concerned about social justice and Samaria and Jerusalem were rife with injustice (2:1-2). Over all, Samaria and Jerusalem represented God’s people because their broken relationship with God was most evident in the capital cities, the seats of power and privilege.

Application: It’s interesting that our capital cities are also the places where we find the most corruption and immorality. Canberra is known for its pornography and Brisbane isn’t far behind, and crime is rampant on the Gold Coast. Our capital cities define our nation, both positively and negatively. That’s why it is so important as Christians to make a stand against moral decline in our nation. Jesus calls us to be like salt, to be a preservative against decay, otherwise we may face the consequences along with the rest of our nation. We can start with how we vote in 5 weeks time. Make an informed decision based on the morality of our political parties.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, like Micah saw the moral and spiritual decline of Israel and Judah, so Australia is moving further and further from You and Your will. Lord, give me wisdom and boldness to make a stand against the sin in our society. Lord, may I be a voice for Your honour and glory. Lord, I pray that You will send Your Holy Spirit into our nation that more and more people will seek to honour You and turn from their sin and rebellion. Lord, unless You intervene our nation will fall, and so I pray for You to transform people’s hearts, that You will be acknowledged as Lord and King. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
