The Truth

Scripture: John 18:37-38a, ‘Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”

Observations: After being dragged before the high priest the Jews bring Jesus to Pilate, the Roman Governor, because only he could sentence someone to death. Pilate asks Jesus if he is the king of the Jews. Rather than answer him directly Jesus says, ‘For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.’ Rather than defend himself, Jesus defends the truth. According to Jesus his purpose for coming into our world is to bear witness to the truth, what is true about God, what is true about himself, and what is true about humanity. Jesus proclaimed the truth. Earlier Jesus even said ‘I am the Truth (Jn 14:6). What does Jesus mean though by people who are ‘of the truth?’ Basically Jesus means that those who want to know the truth, or who are on the side of truth, will listen to Jesus. However, Pilate isn’t one of those people, instead he asks, ‘what is truth?’ Which is a common question today, everyone prefers their own version of the truth. It’s also concerning to hear it on the lips of the highest judicial authority in the land, especially as he goes on to pronounce Jesus ‘innocent.’

Application: Christianity all comes down to our understanding of the truth. Do we believe the claims of Jesus are true or false? If they are true than we must recognize that Jesus is God in the flesh, come down to earth to die for our sins on the cross, and that the only way to be saved and receive forgiveness and eternal life is to put our faith in him and recognize him as Lord and Saviour. If Jesus’ claims are false we ought to reject him, either as insane or as a deceiver of the worst kind. It’s interesting to note that even Pilate who refused to recognize the truth still proclaimed Jesus’ innocence. Like Pilate many people sit on the fence, even though logically there is none. What do you believe about Jesus, and how is that changing your life?

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, You sent Jesus into the world to proclaim the truth about You, to proclaim the truth about Himself, and to proclaim the truth about me. And Lord, because of Your Holy Spirit working in my heart I believe the truth, I believe that Jesus died for my sins on the cross so that I could be reconciled with You. Lord, help me live as Jesus’ servant. Help me follow Him and by the power of Your Spirit become more like Him. Help me proclaim the truth, help me proclaim Jesus as Saviour and Lord. In His name I pray. Amen.
