The Truth Will Set You Free

Scripture: John 8:32, ‘Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’

Observations: That phrase ‘the truth will set you free,’ gets bandied around a lot, but what does it really mean? Before we get set free, first we need to know the truth. So what is the truth? Jesus actually starts by saying ‘if you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. (v31)’ Jesus’ teaching is the truth. But even more than that, it’s following Jesus’ teaching (becoming his disciple), or applying his truth that will set us free. In fact Jesus goes on to say, ‘I tell you the truth, everyone who sons is a slave to sin. (v34)’ and ‘a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it for ever. (v35)’ Jesus is saying that the truth is that as sinners we can never belong to God’s family, what we need is to become sons of God. As sinners our father is the Devil (v44), and as sinners we reject Jesus God’s Son (v45). But if we love Jesus and listen to Jesus we prove that God is our Father (v42,47). The truth is found in Jesus Christ, and when we put our faith in him, we are set free from our sin and become sons of God. Jesus actually says, ‘if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. (v36)’

Application: When Jesus says that the truth will set us free he is talking about being freed from the eternal consequences of our sin. Without Jesus we are bound by our sin, but through faith in him he breaks those shackles. Without Jesus we are the children of Satan, but through Jesus we become the children of God. Without Jesus we are outside God’s family, in Christ we belong to God’s family. And those truths are where we find our freedom. We no longer need to fear death. We no longer need to fear the future. We no longer need to fear anything, because Christ has set us free from our sin and we now belong to God.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, once I was bound by my sin, once I was a slave to sin, and even though I still commit sin, I know that in Christ You have set me free. Lord, forgive me of my sin and wash me clean in the blood of Your Son. Help me to live in the freedom that I have in Jesus. I belong to You, help me to live as one of Your children, help me to become more like Your Son, Jesus Christ. I thank You that You have set me free and that I never need to fear what the future holds. Thank You that I belong to Your family, and that in Christ You are my Father. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
