True Family and Friendship

Scripture: Proverbs 17:17, ‘A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.’

Observations: The point of this proverb is that certain people stick by you no matter what. A friend loves at all times, whether things are going well or not, while a brother will be there even in the midst of adversity. This proverb defines these relationships in terms of their commitment i.e. a friend proves his friendship by his commitment and families are expected to help because that’s what families do, they support one another.

Application: As we can only speak for ourselves we need to ask whether we are a friend who loves at all times, and whether we are there for our family in adversity? Would your friends turn to you when they are in need, or aren’t you that sort of friend? Would your brother, or sister, or parents, or children turn to you for help or don’t you have that sort of relationship with your family? What would it take to strengthen your friendships or your family relationships? Are you willing to take that step to become a real friend, or a true family?

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, elsewhere You tell us that both our friends and our families are a gift from You, and that they are meant to be a source of strength and encouragement for us. But Lord we recognize that because of sin these relationships are often not what they are meant to be. Lord, I ask that You bring healing between families in our church, that You help us create friendships that honour You and deepen each other’s faith. Lord, even in my own family and friendships, may I become a source of strength and encouragement to them. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
