Scripture: John 4:23, ‘Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.’
Observations: Jesus often says things that are very dramatic. What does he mean that ‘a time is coming and has now come?’ Has it come or not? Jesus is responding to the Samaritan woman’s question about where to worship. This was an important question, and Jesus is putting the stress on ‘was’ for it is no longer important. A time is coming when ‘true worshippers’ won’t worship in the Temple in Jerusalem because they will be filled with the Holy Spirit and they will worship always and everywhere. In fact, that time ‘has now come’ in the person of Jesus who is a ‘true worshipper.’ Jesus worships his ‘Father in spirit and truth,’ and through his death and resurrection and the sending of the Holy Spirit he makes it possible for all who put their faith in him to ‘worship the Father in spirit and truth.’ God seeks people who worship him out of the fullness of the new life they have received by the Spirit (in spirit) and on the basis of God’s revelation of himself in Jesus Christ (in truth). Only the Spirit applying the work of Christ can produce worship that is acceptable in God’s sight.
Application: God is looking for people who worship him, and not who just go through the motions of worship, but who are ‘true worshippers,’ who worship him ‘in spirit and truth,’ who worship through the Spirit and according to the truth that through faith in Jesus Christ our sins have been forgiven and we have been reconciled with God. True worship is grounded in our faith in Jesus Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. If you believe in Jesus you have the Spirit, then you are a true worshipper, not bound by time or place, but who worships God in all things at all times. Renew your pledge to worship God in spirit and truth today.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, in the Old Testament worship was so caught up in a place and at certain times, but You sent Your Son into our world in order to change all that. Because of Jesus the curtain in the Temple was torn and You made it possible for us to have free access to You. In fact, through Your Holy Spirit You have made Your Temple within us. Lord, help me to be a true worshipper who worships You in spirit and truth. Lord, may my worship of You flow out of all that I do and say. Lord, may I worship You today from the time that wake to the time that I sleep. May I bring glory to the name of Jesus Christ my Lord. In His name I pray. Amen.
