Ture Love and Peace

Scripture: Psalm 85:10, ‘Love and faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss each other.’

Observations: The Psalmist rests in the promises of God, particularly the promise of peace (v8). However, it’s not peace at no cost, rather he says, ‘but let them not return to folly. (v8)’ God is displeased (v4) and angry at his people’s sin (v5), but he is also forgiving (v2). Verse 10 reveals the key to God’s ‘unfailing love, (v7)’ and the peace he mentions in verse 8. Firstly, ‘love and faithfulness meet together.’ Where there is unfaithfulness there is no love. God’s people cannot say they love God and yet be unfaithful to him. And God cannot say he loves his people unless he is also faithful to them. That is true in all relationships. I husband cannot express his love for his wife and then be unfaithful to her. Love is defined by faithfulness. Secondly, ‘righteousness and peace kiss each other.’ It’s only in living according to God’s will, what is right in God’s eyes, will we find true peace. There can be no peace apart from God. Again this is true in all of life. How can there be peace when there is injustice. The Psalmist reinforces these two ideas when he says ‘Faithfulness springs from the earth, and righteousness looks down from heaven. (v11)’ What he means is that when God’s people are faithful to Him, God in his righteousness will give them peace, in fact he ‘will indeed give what is good. (v12). Finally, the Psalmist says, ‘Righteousness goes before him and prepares the way for his steps. (v13)’

Application: Firstly, it is essential to understand this concept in terms of our relationship with God. It’s hypocritical to expect God’s love when we are unfaithful, or to expect peace when we are unrighteous, and yet we should expect God to be faithful and give us peace, because unlike us he truly is loving and righteous. Secondly, this concept it essential for us to understand what love and peace truly are. Love is defined by faithfulness, and peace is only possible when people do what is right. We love others when we are faithful to them, we are at peace only when there is righteousness. Have you experienced God’s love and peace? Are you faithful and righteous?

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You that You are loving and righteous, because the truth is that I am unloving and unrighteous, I am unfaithful to you and I don’t do what is right in Your eyes. And yet I know peace with You because of Your faithfulness to me in Jesus Christ. Lord, help me to be faithful to You and to others. Help me to love as You love. Lord, help me to do what is right, so that Your peace might reign in my life. And help me to bring peace into the lives of others as I do what is right by them. And Lord, I pray for Christ’s return that Your faithfulness may reach the heavens and Your peace extend to the ends of the earth. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
