What Belongs to God

Scripture: Leviticus 7:25-26, ‘Anyone who eats the fat of an animal from which an offering by fire may be made to the Lord must be cut off from his people. And wherever you live, you must not eat the blood of any bird or animal.’

Observations: It’s interesting how often God doesn’t give the reasons for the commands he gives. Maybe the point is that if God says it we should just obey it. Here God tells his people that they aren’t to eat fat or blood. The fat is burned up on the altar as ‘an offering by fire made to the Lord.’ They could use the fat for any other purpose, but not for eating (v24). It seems that like God decided that yeast would represent sin, so he decided that fat would be set apart for him alone (3:16). A side effect was that a diet without fat may have been healthier. God also decided that blood would be set apart to atone for people’s sin. Later God says, ‘For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life. (Lev 17:11)’ Ultimately, the blood of the sacrifices represent Christ’s blood spilt on the cross in order to atone for our sins.

Application: While we are no longer bound by the ceremonial laws which have been fulfilled in Christ, many of the principles still remain valid. The principle here is that what God has set apart for himself belongs to God, not to us. That has an impact on how we see our time, our resources, our bodies, and even our lives. Do you use what God has given to you for yourself or for Him, for your pleasure or for God’s pleasure? We may not be bound by the Sabbath laws, but do we use our time to worship God? We may not be bound by the Tithe laws, but do we use our resources and our money to grow God’s kingdom. We may not be bound by the Sacrificial laws, but do we use our life to bring God glory?

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, You are holy and You deserve all glory and honour, and even though in Christ You have set me free, that freedom isn’t a license to be self-centred, but to serve You. Lord, help me set apart my life to honour You. Lord, fill me with Your Holy Spirit that I might give You the best that I have to offer, whether that’s my time, my money, or even my life. Lord, may I not keep for myself what belongs to You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
