What Will You choose?

Scripture: Psalm 1, ‘Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.’

Personalized: I am blessed when I do not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. My delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law I meditate day and night. I am like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever I do prospers. Not so if I am wicked! Then I am like chaff that the wind blows away, and I won’t stand in the judgment, or in the assembly of the righteous. For the Lord watches over my way if I am righteous, but if my way is wicked I will perish.

Application: Of course the gospel teaches us that the only way we can be righteous is by putting our faith in Jesus Christ. But the Psalm is clear, my only hope is to delight in God’s word, both his written word, the Scriptures, but more importantly the Word incarnate, Jesus Christ. Apart from Christ I will never stand on Judgment Day, I will never be a part of the assembly of the righteous. But I will not only delight in Jesus Christ, I will also delight in his words and apply them to my life.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, You promise to bless those who love You and listen to Your word, and You also promise to judge those who ignore You and Your word. Lord, I want to live in relationship with You through faith in Your Son, Jesus Christ. Lord, forgive me sins ad watch over my way that I might not perish, but instead on the Day of Judgment that I might stand with Your people and receive eternal life. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
