You are an Apostle

Scripture: John 17:18, ‘As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.’

Observations: The idea that God ‘sent’ Jesus into the world is a common one in John. In fact, believing that Jesus is ‘sent’ from God is one of the critical statements of the Christian faith (5:36,38; 6:29; 7:29; 8:42; 11:42; 17:3,8). But Jesus as God sent Jesus into the world so he sends his followers into the world. The word ‘sent’ in Greek is apostello, from which we get Apostle. Jesus is the ultimate ‘APOSTLE,’ he commissioned his disciples to be ‘Apostles’ with special authority to not just share the gospel but to write it down, but all followers of Jesus are ‘apostles’ in the sense that we are sent into the world as ambassadors of Jesus (2 Cor 5:20). We call this idea ‘the Great Commission (Mt 28:19-20).’ While he says this in his highly priestly prayer, later he states it emphatically, ‘As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you. (20:21)’ As followers of Christ our task is to continue Jesus’ work on earth. John describes his task as sharing the gospel that people might ‘believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing they might have life in his name. (20:31)’

Application: Do you see yourself as an apostle, as someone sent by Jesus into the world with the Good News of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ? That doesn’t mean your words will become Scripture, or even that you need to plant churches or become a missionary, but it does mean that your purpose in life isn’t to build your own kingdom, but to build God’s Kingdom. Do you look for opportunities to tell others about Jesus? Do you seek to live according to the values of God’s Kingdom or the values of this world? Remind yourself today that you are an apostle.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, just as You sent Your One and Only Son into the world so You send us to continue His work of proclaiming the Good news of Your Kingdom. Lord, forgive me when my life is about building my kingdom, and living for my needs and desires. Lord, forgive me when I am afraid of making a stand for You and telling others about the new life that I have in Jesus. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit that I might not just become more life Jesus but that I will also tell others about him with boldness. Help me grow Your kingdom one person at a time, and show me who that person is today. In Jesus’ name and for Your glory I pray. Amen.
