You are "gods"

Scripture: Psalm 82:6-7, ‘I said, ‘You are “gods”; you are all sons of the Most High.’ 7 But you will die like mere men; you will fall like every other ruler.’

Observations: In this Psalm, ‘God gives judgment among the “gods.” (v1)’ But who is he talking to? At first glance it may seem he is referring to the pagan gods who allow injustice to flourish, but here in verses 6 and 7 we calls them ‘sons of the Most High.’ The temptation is then to think he’s talking to angels. But he then says they ‘will die like mere men.’ The key is found in the phrase, ‘you will fall like every other ruler.’ These “gods” are in fact ‘rulers,’ people who act representatives of God. As God’s representatives, or “gods,” these people are accountable to God. However they were ‘defending the unjust and showing partiality to the wicked. (v2)’ And so God commands them to ‘defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. (v3)’ As God’s representative they were to act like God, or he would judge them.

Application: As followers of Christ we are not only to become like Christ in a sense we are Christ. When we call ourselves by Christ’s name we become his representatives on earth. When people see us they see Christ. As ‘sons of the Most High’ we are called to reflect God’s character in the world. What do people see when they see us? People who ignore the poor and needy? People who ‘know nothing (v5)’ about what it means to be like Jesus? People who are worldly? Calling yourself a Christian is no small thing, it means being Christ to others.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, just the fact that I can call You Father in Christ, carries with it the great responsibility of giving You honour and glory in every aspect of my life. You have saved me and called me Your son, and I am now Your representative here on earth. Lord, fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Protect me from the Evil One who wishes to bring dishonour to Your name through my life. Help me to become more like You so that when people see me they may glimpse Your great love for humanity in Jesus Christ. In His name I pray. Amen.
